Canadian ammolite is a rare and radiant gemstone formed from the fossilized shells of ancient ammonites, marine creatures that lived over 70 million years ago. Known for its vivid iridescence flashing reds, greens, blues, and even purples - ammolite rivals opal in its play of color but is entirely organic in origin. This gemstone is found almost exclusively in the Bearpaw Formation of southern Alberta, Canada, where tectonic pressure and mineral-rich sediment preserved the ammonite shells in spectacular detail. Ammolite is so unique that it was officially recognized as a gemstone in 1981, and it holds cultural significance for Indigenous peoples like the Kainai Nation, who refer to it as aapoak, meaning “small, crawling stone”. Today, it’s prized not only for its beauty but also for its rarity, with only a small fraction of mined material suitable for jewelry-grade use.
